This tool assumes one remaining assessment and percentage-based grades. Enter your average on all the non-final work, the final's weight, and your desired overall grade.
Required final = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight
The formula uses weight as a decimal. Your form entry of 40% becomes 0.40. With 75% current, a 40% final, and an 80% target, you need 87.5%.
Extra credit, curved grades, multiple outstanding assessments, mandatory pass marks, and institutional rounding are outside this model. Use your syllabus as the authority.
